Why now?
Development tools on Macintosh computers targeted at other platforms have always been either hard to find or expensive.
Since most of Macintosh computers are running an OS based on BSD this has changed rapidly.

Porting is easy
Most people would say that porting existing freely available development software to MacOSX is easy.
Indeed many tools can be ported easily. But still there are a lot of tools which heavily rely either on hardware (like LPT programmers) or on underlying OS (like Linux header files and libraries).
