What can I use?
Currently there are the SDCC compiler package with basic Microchip support and the GNU picutils package. Both can be fetched from the "download" page.
The Mac OSX IDE for Microchip is a graphical frontend for various external assembler/compiler tools. The only integrated part so far is the USB programmer support. See the PIC IDE page for further information.

No parallel port?
Most PIC programming tools for Windows/Linux platforms are using either a serial port or the parallel port to program the PIC's.
The advantage of those tools is that it can be built inexpensive. On the other side most of them require an external power supply.

Go for USB
Since USB devices have become more and more affordable it is obvious that this is the best choice for using it on a Macintosh computer to attach an external programmer. And also no additional power supply is needed.
See the USB PIC programmer page for additional information.
